Tectonic plate movements

Himalayan Salt thought to be created by tectonic plate movements form a mountain range covering a small inland sea. Over time this dehydrated, leaving pure, mineral-rich sea salt deposits.

Magnesium chloride deposits

The Zechstein sea was a saline, inland sea which formed around what is now the UK, Denmark and Holland. Slowly over time the abundant magnesium chloride was deposited under the sea bed.

Roman soldiers were paid in salt, which led to the term ‘Salary’ and also the expression ‘He’s worth his salt’.
